In Illinois, your trial will be set 15 – 45 days from the time of your arraignment (that's where you plead to the charge). In my experience the docket usually sets you for 30 days after arraignment. They tell you right there when your next court date is, if it will be a conflict for you or your attorney another date can be requested.

    Hope this helps.

you do it when they say: This is your court date. You must appear on …

    you'll get a letter

It's usually the next court date, 30-45 days. The lawyer can request a longer court date.

That is what I was thinking 30-45 days or depending on how full the court docket is. If you have a lawyer he or she should be able to get some kind of idea at the pretrail appearance. The retired police man above his answer sounds more like how things works. Good Luck
