Marijuana legalization Question?

Right now it looks like California is going to legalize pot in November since polls indicated that 60% of Californians are in favor. However, anything can happen to those polls between now and November, especially once all the anti-pot commercials and advertisements spring up near voting time.

My question: How is California law enforcement going to enforce DUI when it comes to pot? I'm assuming that there will be ALOT more people driving while they're high if legalization goes into effect. Is there any technology out there that will help law enforcement determine if someone is high while they are driving? How do you think California law enforcement should go about?

That’s really a good question! There will have to be some rule changes about cops testing for pot. They can do the ‘roadside sobriety test’ or take people downtown for a blood test.

But I don’t think there’s much reason to expect that the number of people driving stoned will increase by a large amount. Pot is only nominally illegal in California now. Its VERY easy to get a medical marijuana card, anyone who wants one can get one. Many of our cities and counties announced years ago that they’re not going to waste limited law-enforcement resources on catching casual pot smokers. And Pres. Obama announced that the feds will no longer go after medical pot in California. So while I do see outright legalization making pot a little easier to get, I don’t think the number of pot smokers will suddenly mushroom. In fact when Prohibition was abolished, alcohol consumption went DOWN!

Did you read somewhere that pot legalization was going to be on the ballot? I haven’t read that. That would certainly be cool, but you’re right, there will definitely be a lot of money spent in misleading ads, labeling pot a ‘narcotic’, claiming that it’s physically addictive, that it makes people wild and crazy, that it causes crime, etc. etc.

I live in PA and we have something that can tell your THC level, something similar to a breathalyzer. Then it’s called a DWI.

They may use urine tests, blood tests, and drug recognition examination (DRE). DRE is a multistep process designed to identify drug impairment.

opinions can always change but it looks like the masses will vote for legalization. they can test if your high with a device similar to a brethalizer but for crons.
