•You're at a fellow deputy's house and find marijuana in an ashtray. What do you do?
•You enter a huge office building to search for a burglar...your back up enters from the opposite side of the building. You have no dog. What do you do?
1. Assuming I was a patrol officer (I’m now a sergeant). I would call a Captain to the scene and pass it off to him. That way if I put it out of my hands without committing career suicide by either arresting him or not.
2. I would leave the house and report it up the chain of command.
3. I would try to call for more backup. 2 is not enough for a large building. If I can’t get more backup, I would have the other officer move to my side of the building or I would do to his. Or we just watch the building until we can get more backup or figure out what is going on. If we absolutely have to search, you *NEVER* search a building by yourself and having two officers moving independently is also a recipe for friendly fire. So me and the other officer would be searching with each other at the other’s hip.
