Because it is impossible to debate the merits of liberalization of our drug laws without being accused of being "soft on crime" or a "hippie". Marijuana should be legal like Alcohol, and taxed. It should also be against the law to drive while under the influence of marijuana, just like alcohol.

I think alcohol is legal because it isn’t deadly if you don’t have too much. And they say red wine is good for a healthy heart. :)

    Marijuana is tha thang

Because any idiot can grow pot and the gov’t can’t make them pay taxes as it can be hidden. Most home brewed wine, beer, and liquor taste like crap, and the gov’t can tax the fool out of it. Personally, all of it kills your brain cells, so if you don’t want a brain, smoke, toke, and drink away.

"weed" is herbal, i cant see the problem with it…

Probably because it’s been around longer and is used more widely. As a society, we’re always more afraid of the unknown than anything else. Alcohol was illegal, too, a long time ago. Now we’re used to it and it’s no big deal. The same thing will probably happen eventually with marijuana, if people keep using it. I understand your point though….its seems kinda counter-intuitive.

Alcohol has gone hand in hand with civilisation since before recorded history. Marijauana is a relatively new thing. Until quite recently, domestic water supplies have not been safe to drink. Plain water would frequently infect the drinker with all manner of horrible organisms, giving them dysentery, typhoid and many other potentially fatal diseases.

They made it out to be a bad drug long ago in like the early 90′s. There was a documentary on the History Channel about it. I think that when the government realizes that a drug makes people, lots of people, feel really good, they decided to outlaw it. The revenue from fining and confiscating from these people must be good! They tried with alcohol, and the masses just shot it down! I don’t think alcohol or tobacco could be made illegal because of their popularity. Who knows.

Alcohol is not "deadlier", what you cite in your statement is caused by abusing alcohol. Abusing Majiuanna and drivng will kill just as quick. Marijuana will not be legalized any time soon. There is too much anti smoking sentiment around these days to legalize something that is smoked…

Well it’s not in many Muslim countries. It is here possibly because of the Biblical association and things like Solomon’s advice which was for people to eat, drink and be merry.

Ill tell you why, cause the government wants to make sure they get their money from drugs one way or another. If they could tax marijuana and make sure everyone who has it paid taxes they would be happy. But no one would, so they arrest you so you get a big fine and jail time, and they are happy{government} because of the fine.

Marijuana has been around longer, easier to produce-grow. And the government has no idea how to control it-taxes. I know some states don´t enforce the law much and will allow you to have a couple plants providing they do not grow too big, and you are not selling in large quantities.

The affects of both are the same, it interferes with your thought process, You get drunk and drive, you could kill some one, same as if you get stoned and drive. You may not even know it until some one tells you about it when you sober up. The long term affects are the same, in killing brain cells.

Major difference is the fact, most home made alcohol tastes bad, if you make any that tastes good and you are caught, you could go to prison for a long time, unless you prove you had a contract to make it for a legitimate alcohol company. I met a person who did just that, but he lost his contract and had to destroy all his home made brew. He told me if he didn´t, and was caught with all he had, he would wind up in prison for at least twenty years. You would not believe how much he had. as for marijuana, any one can grow it, and hide it real easy, sell it, and the government has no way to control it or tax it and it drives them crazy.

By what I’ve heard you would have to be able to smoke 2 pounds of pot in one giant ‘hit’ to overdose. That’s impossible. How many people have been sent to the hospital with alcohol poisoning? How many with pot poisoning? How many college and high school kids die from drinking too much in a binge?

    Marijuana should be legalized.

  17. myyahooanswersaccount1184 says:

Marijuana was legal until 1937. During the Great Depression the population began blaming the depression on illegal Mexican immigrants taking all the jobs. Even though they were far from the only ones using it, the population associated Mexicans with marijuana. During this time, the government helped fund "Reefer Madness" which basically said marijuana will make a mild mannered person turn into a insane homicidal sex fiend. They also produced studies saying marijuana was associated with crime, violence, and the lower class. With the public believing this, the government made marijuana illegal. The source below has a pretty good article about this. This actually happened, and isn’t some crazy conspiracy theory, by the way.

Some of the downsides of legalizing marijuana would be that taxes from marijuana sales may not make up for the money the government makes from arrests and tickets. Also, marijuana still being associated primarily with hippies and anti-government groups won’t get it legalized any faster. I still wonder why the public has yet to be allowed to vote on legalization…
