I got a DUI earlier this year, and naturally, my insurance rates went way up. I'm getting ready to move in with my girlfriend, and we are planning on selling one of the cars. If I sell my car, couldn't I just drive her car and not have to pay the high insurance rates? This seems underhanded and like I'm cheating the system. What are the rules and stipulations with this sort of situation.

If you sell your car and drive your girlfriends car, she MUST call her insurance company to let them know that you are now driving her car too. The insurance company will need your name, dob, dl#. If she does not do this… it MIGHT not be covered if you drive her car and get into an accident.

The insurance company will need to add you as a driver in the household… and depending on her insurance company, you might not be eligible to operate her vehicle because of the DUI (meaning worst case scenario her insurance company COULD cancel her policy OR could exclude you, which would mean that you would NOT be able to drive her car AT ALL- not even for an emergency!) The best case scenario… is the insurance company would just add you as a hh driver…. and the rates would increase. A DUI is a MAJOR MOVING VIOLATION and some insurance companies will NOT cover someone who has had a MAJOR moving violation within the past 3 years.

Tell your girlfriend that she needs to call her insurance company and check with them on IF you are able to drive her car or not.

This MUST be done if you are going to drive her car on a regular basis, ESPECIALLY if you sell your car. If you do not follow the insurance company’s rules and guidelines… then if there is a claim, it could be denied, or even worse, your girlfriend could loose her insurance. Its hard to give you a guarentee of what her insurance company will do because insurance varries from state to state and company to company.

DUI’s are NO good… and hopefully you learned your lesson! You are just lucky you didn’t get into an accident and get hurt or hurt someone else!

If you crash her car, the insurance probably wouldn’t pay out.

short term savings vs. long term expenses (an accident)….your choice

Don’t know how expensive the cars are. If the one you keep is not too much put yourself down as secondary driver and only have liability.

If you are still in the habit of drinking and driving I think it’s best to keep full coverage and it won’t matter what you do because a second DUI is very common within 2 years of the first…and the punishment terms go up significantly.

Protect your girlfriend’s record too. Besides I don’t know if you can get a lot of money for your car in this market.

Do not do this. It has the potential to end badly if you have an accident in her car while living together.

Most policies have a clause that state they will not cover a driver who lives in the household but is not listed on the policy.

If the her car is made available for you to use on a regular basis the policy won’t cover you for an at-fault accident unless you are named on the policy.

So you either need to keep your car/insurance or get listed on her policy. Either way it will be costly, but likely will be a lot cheaper than paying for an at-fault accident out-of-pocket.

At first, you may collect some infomation by inputing the relevant keywords in search engine,if you get good luck there, then your problem is solved.nevertheless,if you could not find the ideal answer for your question by doing that, here http://www.AutoInsuranceFree.info/free-auto-insurance.htm is the resource i suggest.

You will have to be added to her insurance to be covered. Then those rates will go up instead.
