Has an imballance emerged, between the perception of DUI and other new dangerous driving habits?

.....but a few decades ago, almost nobody had a cell phone or even knew what texting was. Having a Television permananetly mounted in the vehicle would have been considered incredibly irresponsible. Yet there things are quickly becoming universal.
I'm not saying DUI penalties should be lessened, but before we crack down even harder, isnt it time to take a look at all the new dangerous 'addictive' gadget habits people are aquiring, now that you can surf the internet, talk on the phone, look at your gps screen and have a tv on
all while driving
completely legally?
Amen, sister I couldn’t have said it better!
Many states are outlawing talking on a cell phone while driving, as well as some of the other things you mentioned. It takes a while for the laws to catch up with reality in every last state but it’s headed in that direction.
The problem is that there are always lawyers out there who are willing to work to fight the overall benefit. I know it sounds counter productive, but there are always two sides to an argument.
DUI is dangerous. It is an altered state of mind that causes someone to lose control of themselves.
However, all these other devices, such as cell phones, MP3 players, etc, simply cause distraction. Its a lot easier to hide a distraction than an altered mental state. So it may not be that they are not known to be dangerous, its just that there isnt enough proof to cause legislative action.
