A buddy got a DUI raised to a felony bcz he hit his car in a parking lot w/ minor damage. Typical penalties?

Yeah, according to the police, it became a felony because it involves two charges:
1. DUI
2. Vandalism (the threshold is 0 and the car repair costs are higher than that ~estimated at about 00)
The location is San Diego, CA.
By the way, he was taken to jail where he was supposed to stay 5-6 days but we bailed him out.

Sounds like overcharging… If there is only property damage, it shouldn’t be charged as a felony. He should fight it. A competent attorney should be able to get it reduced to a misdemeanor. I don’t know what state he’s in, but the penalties in California would include loss of driving privilege, attendance of a First Conviction driver’s course, a one night MADD impact panel attendance, fines of about $2k and probation for five years, during which time he could not drive with any measurable amount of alcohol in his system. In San Diego, he wouldn’t do any custody, but might have to do some Public Works Service. Plus pay restitution to anybody whose property was damaged by him.

He should definitely hire an attorney to fight it. A good attorney might be able to get him out of it or minimize his punishment.
