I was convicted of a DUI or OWI back in the late 80's. Recently I was fingerprinted for a job and the conviction did not show. Does the conviction just go away after so many years?
NO, the conviction is always there, but different types of fingerprint checks will report different things. Generally work fingerprints will come back with something like "no history that meets the criteria." Generally only felonies and in some cases domestic violence convictions are reported.
Request a driving abstract from WI DOT. That is your actual operator’s license record in our State.
Remember, a 1st offense OWI is not a crime here. It’s only a civil forfeiture. There is no "criminal"record, but it may still show on your abstract.
There was a time when OWIs no longer showed on you driving record, but I think a law change in the 90s put all OWIs back on the record available to cops and dispatchers.
I would tell the employer just in case. It’s so long ago that they shouldn’t have a problem with it, unless they find out from someone other than you.
