Should I give up my life long dream of being a police officer if I got a DUI years ago?

I hear this more and more. That if you have a DUI then you can't be police officer. It really kills me. I got a DUI when I was 20.. I'm 22 now and major in Law Enforcement. I still have about a year and a half to go. Am I a fool to think I can be a police officer with my record? ...

This may hurt with some departments but not with others

People have gotten DUIs and went on to be senators, congressmen , govenors….. and even President………………..

kidding aside….. if its a life long dream go for it but competition is tough………. excel at school…… spend alot of time at the gym and you will be OK one Dept my decline but others will want you…………… good luck be tough study hard

Probably. You may be able to get on somewhere but just like any first responder you are probably out of luck due to the background check.

No, that’s not going to permanently disqualify you but you’re going to have to let more time pass first. It’s up to you to prove you have drinking under control.

You can still be a police officer but most agencies require a lot longer than two years to have elapsed for a DWUI conviction. Think 5-10 years. Keep at school and graduate and look into different departments when you are done. Requirements vary greatly from department to department. Good luck and stay out of trouble from now on and you still have a chance.
