I have a DUI. Will I be able to get any job in the field of law enforcement?

My dream job is to be an animal cop. I would also like to be a youth correctional officer, a juvenile counselor or a dispatcher, but i'm afraid i ruined my chances with the DUI 2 years ago. thanks ahead!

Not all, this is no Nazi Germany, no matter what the Goose stepping Media says these days. This is a forgiving society as a rule (look at Hollywood and politicians), now if you got 4 or 5 DUI’s that could be a bit f an obstacle, but time can cover over many problems, and it was two years ago. Did you learn your lesson? Did you grow up some? or do you carry a chip on your shoulder about getting ticketed (Cops where picking on me!). if not, your dreams have a great chance of going through, so just set your sails in that way, and put he bottle down, and you will-soon get what you seek.

Thats not a good example though…..

Everybody’s life is ruined. It’s not the DUI.

If your conviction was under the age of 21 you might be able to get it expunged on a "youthful offender" motion.

Looks like you just screwed the dog.

I don’t think the DUI will be a problem (technically, it’s still a traffic thing); as long as nothing else is on your record and you have changed your ways.

yes you will still be able to pursue a career in law enforcement…….

Yes, you can. The good thing is it is a Misdemeanor instead of a felony. I have a couple of friends who are cops, who both have DUI’s. When you apply you just need to be upfront with them, they will work with you.

If it was a misdemeanor, no problem. Felony??? Not a Chance…

Well in Allentown, Pennsylvania a police officer who had a DUI prior to becoming a police officer ran over and killed a 4 year old on the way to call.

So I guess I would have to say that they don’t have as high of standards as I thought they did – so you may be in the clear.

Were you convicted of a felony? If so, look for another career.

  12. Mary W says:

No, you can apply and get accepted these days. When you interview you need to show that you are positive about your experiences with alcohol or whatever and that you bring your experiences with you to a law enforcement position. The federal government’s idea about applicants is somewhat like this: If you did it, admit it and NEVER lie. If you lie once, they predict that you will lie again. That is unacceptable to law enforcement.

  13. Artman says:

You might be OK. They basically look to avoid people with criminal history.

Most law enforcement department don’t see a one-time DUI as a "serious" offense, unless you harm anyone or do something stupid like trying to out-run police.

Even the LA-PD ask as one of the requirement "to have a history of lawful conduct.". They don’t ask to have no traffic violations but to have no "serious" arrests. And traffic violations are not given too much consideration unless you have more than one, show a history of reckless driving or apply for bus driver job.

So don’t be afraid, just be honest when asked about it. They can forgive you a DUI but not a lie.

So you want to be an animal cop and a youth correctional officer?

So will you be corralling puppies and kittens…if so I have a kitten that will not come out from under my couch…it keeps pooping and my living room smells really bad.

Could you come and arrest it for me? I don’t care if you have a DUI…I’ll actually pay you in alcohol…actually it might be better if you come over drunk.
