How effective? They do they job, BUT they don’t make miracles, so be realistic about that.
The lawyer will do the best he/she can, but there are no warranties, specially if you know you are guilty and the evidence against you is solid.
You really do need an attorney. 2nd offense is going to be very hard on you. Normally, I would not hire an attorney since I don’t feel they offset the costs in court (for a first offense), but twice is going to hurt you bad.
The primary role of the lawyer is to evaluate all the reports and your statements and determine if there is some theory they can advance, factual or legal, that might lead to acquittal or suppression of evidence, or reason for a favorable plea bargain. I do not know the result of that investigation in your case.
A DUI lawyer helps most in the plea bargaining and reduced sentencing arenas. Here is a law article about the areas they can help in: http://www.dallas-dwi-lawyers.com/articles/do-i-need-a-dwi-attorney/ It’s a matter of knowing the law and possibly reducing charges, etc. Considering you blew a .14, you might wanna seriously consider it. Here’s another law article that has a lot of tips on finding a good lawyer: http://www.cowanlawfirm.com/finding-right-attorney/ I know it’s in Seattle, but all of the questions and points are the same and pretty accurate.
