Have you ever been caught for DUI? Did you have to do jail time?
I got done for a DUI when I was on probation and ended up doing 4 months in jail. I was at college and have missed too much time so have to go back and redo classes that I missed. I know I made a mistake but I think it was a harsh punishment. Do you think DUI laws are fair?. ...

I live in Cali and have had a clean record until I got a DUI. I have a warrant for my arrest to do 7 days. I’m a college student too, so I’m waiting until after finals. I’m turning myself in in about a week.
Luckily I also got the time off from work… I also owe $2,000 in fines. I think DUI cases CAN be unfair in some cases.
I live in Ontario, Canada and our DUI charges are really serious. I think it is fair because a lot of people can avoid the situation by taking taxis, having a DD and driving responsibly. The harsh punishments push people not to drink and drive. It is a lot less of a havoc to pay $60 for a cab then having to deal with a DUI charge. it is unfortunate what you had to go through. The jail time is pretty harsh but there has to be some sort of grounds for that. Good luck with everything.
No because I am smart enough to not only drink responsibly, but know
when I have had too much to safely drive afterwards.
What you did is the direct result of your actions.
In my opinion DUI laws should be even stricter.
What if you had injured or killed someone as a result of your behavior?
Bottom line = whether if caught or not, people should not drink and drive.
DUI laws are fair. You’re lucky you didn’t kill someone or wipe out a whole family. My cousin was arrested for DUI, spent the night in jail, had to pay $1,000 bail, hired a lawyer (which he’s still paying off) who got him community service, DUI classes and mandatory weekly AA meetings, plus he lost his license for 5 years. He’s only 21 and I hope this taught him a hard lesson…to call a taxi.
I absolutely agree with TexHabs. What if you had injured or killed somebody?
I think DUI laws need to be much, much stricter.
Missing too much time and having to redo classes is a direct consequence of your actions.
Hopefully you’ve learned a lesson and can be thankful that making up credits is all you have to do.
You could have killed a person and served years in prison, which in that case, you probably would’nt have even had the chance to return to college. And you also would have had to deal with guilt and shame and a lot of pain. You got off easy and luckily, no one got hurt.
Don’t take the things in your life for granted.
Hey! Well you’re finally done with jail! You seemed pretty nervous beforehand- I remember! In most states a first time DUI offense doesn’t call for jail time. I guess you had it because of the probation. I did 23 days in jail but it wasn’t for the DUI, it was for contempt of court. I did my DUI time on house arrest. I really don’t think that the punishment is too harsh. Usually the first offense is basically a slap on the wrist. After that it gets tougher- as it should. I mean- I apparently didn’t learn my lesson the first time. I sure have now, though! The punishment needs to be something that people look at and are afraid of. Otherwise it wouldn’t deter people from driving while drunk. Jail time is the only threat that really means anything to people. I don’t really think that a fine is much of a punishment.
