DUI laws too strict?

Shouldn't people be Arrested/fined when they actually hurt someone or something? Why do we call drinking and driving a crime? Esentially we are arresting people for something they could potentenially do. If you can drink and drive home with out incident then shouldn't that be ok? If you hit someone or something then you should be charged with whatever you would normally be charged with right? The dui laws take peoples licences away, give thousands in fines, ruin careeers etc. And for what? if they didn't hurt anything then why should they get introuble ?
I am not asking weather or not someone who killed someone should get in trouble. I am asking about the thousands of other people who don't hurt anything but get arrested anyway. Why not just charge people with murder if they hit someone? and if they don't they haven't commited a crime. It's like charging all gun owners with murder because some people kill people with guns.

Every time they arrest a drunk driver, a tragic accident is prevented. A good friend of mine was killed by a drunk driver. I say the laws are not strict enough.

Well if they make it home safely and responsibly, they generally don’t get penalized. A cop will usually only pull you over if they think your driving is a hazard to yourself and others.
The legal limit is set so that you can drive home after a drink or two. If you’re at a police checkpoint and they find your BAC over a certain level, you should be fined and held until sobriety. If you get into an accident, then sure full on punishment.

Your argument is silly though, why should you only be punished for crashing a vehicle, when you are knowingly driving after purposely impairing yourself.
If you needed surgery, and the doctor performing it was fucked up, would you let him do it, or would you try and get him fired. I’m guessing the latter. And his response: "Did I kill anyone?"

The reason why driving under the influence is a crime is because drinking lowers your ability to think and react properly. By arresting a drunk driver, a life is saved, and it teaches the driver to not be so careless to drive under the influence.

I think another aspect of arresting a drunk driver is to keep them quarantined in a cell until they are sober enough to drive safely. Also, when you face consequences, it’s good to learn from your mistakes. It’s a lesson of life.

    Here is the chain:
    I got drunk –> I drove –> I got arrested –> I didn’t like it –> I shouldn’t drive drunk again.

If you do get drunk, just ask somebody to be the designated driver. That way, you won’t potentially kill somebody.

    Update:
Here’s a parallel. You have one or two glasses of wine. You’re not drunk enough to drive recklessly, so you make it home. It’s good.

You own a gun for security purposes, but you’ve never shot it at someone. You don’t get arrested.

If you are suspected of being drunk or posing a threat to others with a gun, you will be arrested. It’s when you’re dangerous to others that it becomes other people’s problem.

The laws aren’t strict enough if you ask me. Here in Hungary to alcohol limit for driving is 0.00%.
I think drunk driving is one of the most selfish things anyone can do. My mother, sister and step-father were all arrested for DUI’s in Cal. and they needed to learn a lesson.
Why can’t people just call a cab or a friend instead of driving and endangering everyone around them.

their was a family that were coming home from a family wedding and their limo was hit by a drunk driver going 70 mph on the wrong side of the road, the mother crawled out of the car holding the head of her 5 year old daughter all b/c some selfish asshole decided to drink and drive so why don’t you ask someone who has lost someone to a drunk driver instead of asking on the computer

    So, using your logic….

No traffic enforcement(speeding, red lights, etc.) should ever occur unless there is an accident.

Someone who drunkenly fires a gun in the air shouldn’t be prosecuted unless they hurt someone.

Someone who merely conspires to commit murder but doesn’t complete it shouldn’t be prosecuted – after all, they didn’t hurt anyone.

Newsflash – One purpose of the law in general and traffic laws in particular is to stop hazardous behavior BEFORE anyone gets hurt.
