It will most definitely require a waiver…the availability of which will be determined on how recruiting is going when he applies.

Edit: Everything ArmChair Goddess said is WRONG

No, especially not during wartime. Historically, the Army has been very forgiving and can even help end probation or parole if need be. The father of my grandchild was convicted of a weapons charge and then violated the terms of his probation, so he did six months in prison, but the Army was very eager to help him enlist. There are also sign-up bonuses available that can go pretty high (for him the offer was $10,000 for a six-year enlistment). Marines have traditionally been reluctant to recruit anyone with a prison record, but this is a time when the United States is fighting two wars (one an illegal one that is winding down, we hope) and they are short-handed because the troops are voluntary enlistments. If your friend is serious about joining, he should probably call the Army. Bootcamp usually takes about eight weeks, unless the friend opts for special forces, which would in all likelihood extend training time. The benefits are great, the friendships you form are life-long, and the sense of pride and purpose is priceless…it’s well worth a shot.
