What is a safe amount to drink and still be under the legal limit?

The simple answer is that there is no way in knowing for sure. There are so many factors that affect the amount someone can drink and still remain under the legal limit. The amount and type of drink consumed as well as age, sex, weight and metabolism all play a part in how well someone can cope with alcohol.

Knowing you are over the limit on the night you are drinking is one thing, but it's far more difficult to know if you are safe to drive the next day. According to the Department for Transport (DfT), one in five drivers found to be over the limit are caught the morning after they consumed alcohol.

Because the amount of time that alcohol stays in the body will vary from person to person, it's impossible to know for certain if you are safe to drive the following morning.

The Penalties of Drink Driving

a€¢ Driving whilst under the influence of alcohol carries a maximum of 6 months imprisonment, a fine of up to £5,000 and a 12 month driving ban. If you are caught re-offending within 10 years then you could face a mandatory 3 year driving disqualification.

a€¢ Causing a death whilst driving under the influence of drink or drugs carries a maximum penalty of 14 years imprisonment and a minimum 2 year driving ban.

a€¢ A drink driving offence will remain on your licence for 11 years

a€¢ If you have a drink driving conviction then expect to see a dramatic increase in the amount you pay for your car insurance. Finding competitive car insurance quotes will be difficult. Many car insurance companies will be unwilling to take the risk of insuring a driver with previous drink driving convictions.

Do you think Drink driving limits should be Reduced in the UK mainland?

I wouldn’t b sure about a zero tolerance but I would agree there probably should be a reduced legal limit as potentially almost any amount can affect your driving, dosen’t matter how much of a lightweight or heavyweight one is on alcohol generally anyway, it still affects you.
What I would also reckon they certainly should do is increase the punishment for repeat offenders because they obviously don’t learn there mistakes, fair enough anyone could make one mistake of it and I think the punishment for first time offenders is fair enough but it’s such an unnessecary risk to take yet so lethal and everyone (unless they’re that thick) should know by now how dangerous it really can be yet I so often hear of people who’ve repeatingly been caught doing it and I also reckon the police should have the right to do more random checks because I reckon one of the main causes that people risk it is that they think they can get away with it so long as they don’t have an accident or attract police attention in anyway (such as by committing another traffic offence)

History of Drink Driving limits in Australia?
What is the history? I have heard that before breathalyzers were invented, the walking in a straight line method was used, when they were invented, the limit in australia was 0.08, now down to 0.05 and the government is thinking about lowering again to 0.02, is there a website that backs up my thoughts? Or can anyone confirm or add onto this. Anything about Drink Driving limits and its history will help, and be greatly appreciated :)

    Drink driving?
Why can I not drink and drive?

I am normally of a nervous disposition and I find after a few beers and a gin or two I loosen up and relax. I know for a fact I drive better when I have had a few and. My gear changes are better and my ability to follow the road is also enhanced.

We are all individuals and we all react differently to drink.

When I am out socially I find that the more alcohol I consume the more articulate I become. I am certain also that the more I drink the more women find me attractive and I am much more humorous. I know this is true because women look at me much more when I am drunk and I am certain they must desire me.

So come on. Triple the drink drive limit and reduce road deaths.

In … hic! Fact… I eben rit betterer when I hav add a few.

    Drink driving limits?
I have about 2 weeks before I have to do an ‘exam’ if you will, on Drink driving.
the question for the exam/coursework is ‘should the drink driving limit be zero’
we have to make 2 arguments, one for the limit to be zero and one that is should stay as it is, but they both have to be equal arguments before we give our opinion.
But the thing is, I can only really find arguments for the ‘yes’ side.
Does anyone have any websites I could go to for information of statistics or anything?

    thanks!
