I wanted to become a reserve office for my local Newport Beach Police Department. I was, however, convicted of a wet reckless charge in January of 2005 and will be finishing my informal probation in January of 08. Can anybody tell me if I am still qualified or do I have to wait 10 years when the DUI can no longer count as a prior?
For all those people writing judgemental answers...I received this conviction and paid my dues. Both monetarily and emotionally. I have established a neighborhood designated driver system to prevent drinking and driving and have never even considered drinking and driving again. Within the 2 years since my conviction I have also lost a close friend to a drunk driver. DO YOU THINK I HAVE LEARNED MY LESSON? I pray to God I never hurt myself or anybody else in the past. So instead of you ASSES that tell me I shouldn't consider doing anything to better my life like being a reserve officer (WHICH MEANS COMMUNITY AND NON-PAID) I think you should reconsider your own lives and think about whether you have ever made a mistake.
Newport Beach in what country/state?
If it’s California, no…the DUI will not statutorily prohibit from you becoming a police officer, reserve or otherwise.
However, the department may choose not to hire you based on that, and that is entirely up to them.
more than likely; pending on the policy of the department, but i would ultimately say so
shame on you- you’re suppose to be protecting people if you want to be a cop, not putting them at risk- please be careful!! And no, you are not qualified.
Not necessarily but it sure doesn’t help. The best thing to do is make an anonymous call to the PD in question and ask them.
Different departments have different rules, however, a majority will not allow a person with any degree of felony to apply for their department
If the DUI was a misdemeanor (most are), I would think you’re OK. However, you’ll probably have to wait to at least your 5 year anniversary to show a couple of years off probation responsibility.
That would depend on the departments policy. Anyone with a Misdemeaner could be disqualified. I would check with them to find out for sure.
A reserve officer on probation???? What do you think?
I know I wouldn’t hire you
I am in Criminal Justice, the answer is absolutely positively yes, dont waste your time, you have other options available to you within the field but you wont be allowed near any patrol vehicle or firearm, if you enjoy sitting behind a desk until your retirement buy a load of preparation H, You may be able to do some type of work through a PI or different type of field in security administration. GOOD LUCK.
