Why are upcoming DUI checkpoints often announced in the local newspapers?
Seems kind of counterproductive, no? ...

You would think that, but they still catch drunk drivers and other offenders.
I think it is more of a ploy to make you think by reminding they are looking for drunk drivers.
Amazing how many people still get caught though.
It might cause traffic problems, so they might have to report it.
the cops are’nt always out to get someone, the article is as much of a deterrent as the actual checkpoints are.
The goal should be to discourage people from drinking and driving, not to arrest a lot of people.
That way, when people inevitably get caught and taken to court, when they try to claim entrapment, the police are able to say they gave adequate public notice and the entrapment claim is thrown out.
You would be amazed to see how many people don;t read newspapers.
Why not do a post? "Do you read a daily newspaper, yes or no."
A few days a go , check point was announced in the newspaper. There were at least 9 people who did not read the newspaper.
I think it’s to warn the average people who may decide to get drunk for some reason or other, so they don’t slip & fall; the truly drunks are going to get picked up by it, anyway. I’m thinking they may do it, to prevent innocent loss of life.
It’s a requirement in case law to help overcome the 4th Amendment issues surrounding stops made without reasonable suspicion.
Mikeysco is right.
SLICK: YAHOO HAS YOU EMBARGOED. YOUR PROFILE IS "oops" not available. I have been trying to answer one of your other questions and get "yahoo is unavailable" so it won’t post the answer. I think they’re on to you.
