Do they just check you out to see if you're sober and clean and let you move along?
They see if you’re drunk.
I have found that the best way to avoid getting a DUI is to not drink and drive. On the surface, this is a very difficult concept for many people to comprehend as many people don’t understand why they aren’t entitled to drive drunk and don’t want anyone telling them they can’t. But it is one that will make DUI checkpoints go much smoother.
They see if your drunk
I’ve never been asked for anything. They shine a flashlight in your face, try to smell your breath and give a quick look in your vehicle. Then say, have a nice evening. Unless, of course, you’re drunk.
It’s just like you are being pulled over. You must have your seat belt on, and they ask to see your drives license, registration and insurance card. After you show them all of that and they shine the flashlight in your face and through your car they usually ask stuff like," Where are you coming from? Where are you going? Have you been drinking tonight? " If you don’t appear to be drunk or under the influence of drugs then they send you on your merry way. If not they do a field sobriety test and if you fail then you are arrested.
i have drive through 2 dui checkpoints, and they never said anything to me. they stop every 10th person, randomly. most people dont get selected.
In my area these checkpoints pick up more than drunk drivers.
As you roll through the checkpoint one of the cars has a license plate recognition system trained on traffic, your plate is compared to the database and if your car is not listed … you go on.
Next an officer looks at you and your car, all appropriate window stickers in place? Seat belt on? Driver appears to be sober? All good … the officer might check license, registration and proof of insurance to see if you have those documents with you.
If you pass through all of the stations without being told to pull over, exit the checkpoint and resume driving at the speed limit!
Do not try to avoid the checkpoint when you see one … there are "chase cars" on both ends of the checkpoint that will catch you.
Do not say stupid stuff while in the checkpoint … any remarks about illegal substances in the vehicle or "dead bodies in the trunk" will be taken seriously!
Being polite will help you speed the process … "Yes, sir" [or ma'am as appropriate] … "Thank you officer".
The officer(s) just checks to see if you are intoxicated and let you leave soon after.
