First question: What are some driving patterns that suggest the driver may be intoxicated?

Second question: What kinds of tests do police officers often use in a field sobriety test? I think the ABC's (without singing) is one of them.

Third question: Other than being charged with DUI, are there any other charges that drunk drivers usually receive? Reckless endangerment perhaps?

Thanks in advance to all who answer.

1st Officer are trained to detect erratic driving patterns. DUI detection class, they give you a chart that indicates the different driving infractions such as swerving, not using signal, crossing the yellow line. Each infraction, will have a percentage represented on the chart as to the probability that the person is drunk. The officer will usually use 2 or more of these infractions to make the stop for DUI.

2nd Walk and turn, One leg test and the gaze test.

3rd Depending on the age of the person, Minor in consumption of alcohol, variety traffic infractions, reckless endangerment (usually when there is a minor child in the vehicle at the time the DUI is made), and of course the most common, DUS (driving under suspended license)

    in order:

    1. swerving excessively, late braking, going into the opposite lane just to name a few.

    2. breathalyzer test, follow a pen from side to side with your eyes, walk a straight line putting one foot directly in front of the other.

    3. reckless endangerment usually goes hand in hand also depending on the officer you could be looking at disorderly conduct but that depends on how well you can compose yourself when outside of your vehicle taking the field sobriety test.

Weaving, driving left of center or over the right lines, driving w/o headlights at night, slow speed.

There are only 3 scientifically approved tests…The one leg stand, the walk and turn and HGN (horizontal gaze nystagmus). The alphabet is not one of them

It depends on the situation. Not all DUI drivers are driving reckless.
