Is it better to flee the scene of an accident or get a DUI?

I got my first, and last, DUI arrest last weekend and caused an accident. Nobody was hurt. I was just wondering if would of been better for me to leave the scene and deal with it the next day when I was sober? Would that have had lesser consequences? No I do NOT plan on doing this again. I just would like to know the answer.

    If no one was hurt,flee the scene.

    The car was stolen.

    Everyones a winner.except the insurance company..which is sad.
    Then take stock and dont DUI..seriously.

    taking the DUI is the better option, i think. but, a lawyer would be the best person to ask.

    No if you leave then it is a hit and run!
    Saturday someone Hit my car parked outside my house and left the scene and left no note. I contacted the police so if he or she is found he/she will be charge with a Hit and Run! I hope I find the
    A$$hole!

    Yes it would have been better

    DUI is definitly worse than hit and run

    Depending on the damage

    Ya I had a similar situation. You would obviously get into trouble for leaving the scene of an accident, but if you do leave they can’t prove that you had been drinking when the accident occured. In my opinion the best thing to do is leave (especially if there are no witnesses), and head straight home/to a bar to have a couple of drinks. Then they can’t prove if you had been drinking before or after the accident.

    People make these errors in judgement all the time. I’m not minimizing the severity of the issue by any means – you’re lucky no one was hurt, but as long as you’ve learnt your lesson it’s not the end of the world (speaking from experience!)

    Leaving the scene would just aggravate the situation, and create more charges, and doubts. You may be sober the next day, but a good investigator would be able to find out what you were doing prior to the accident.

    If you run and you leave the vehicle behind you will get caught. Matters will be worst they will add to the charges leaving the scene of a crime…..

    NEVER leave the scene of an accident. If you are DUI then that was a choice that you made. Should have thought about that earlier.

    well 2 wrongs don’t make a right, don’t leave an accident, someone maybe critically injured, and you wouldn’t want a death on your conscience.

    No, fleeing the scene of an accident is a much worse offense. You are much better off staying and cooperating.

    Here in Canada you would be charged with faliure to report an accident, faliure to remain at the scene of an accident; both a possible jail term, probation, and you would lose your license anywhere from 2-6 years. You are better of staying at the scene of the accident and taking the dui charge.

    It’s always better to take responsibility for your actions just as you did. If you ran and later lied about the incident, maybe you would have gotten away with it, but the potential for other charges would have been opened up making things much more serious. Suddenly in addition to the DUI, you add hit and run, evading arrest, false information to police, filing a false police report, insurance fraud and ultimately perjury. Maybe a nearby business, traffic cam, or citizen caught you on video fleeing the scene. Maybe the other party involved in the accident would testify you were obviously drunk and fled, identifying you as being involved. Maybe an officer would have caught you a block away from the scene. There are plenty of "what if’s" that could easily make things much worse. I think just taking your lumps was the best thing so you don’t have the other issues looming over you.
